2xTC9FD MiniKarlsonators.

Been a while!!! I’ve built quite a lot since the last post and thought it’d be nice to share some of my work during the next week or two.
Hope you enjoy it. This pair of speakers are a smaller (0.53x) version of the original Karlsonators, loaded with a pair of inexpensive Vifa TC9FD drivers.

Wanted to make a system as portable as possible, and for that reason I decided to mount a chipamp on the back panel of one of the speakers. Having read such good comments on the TPA3110 integrated amplifier, went and bought a couple of stereo boards from SURE electronics, and used one of them for this project.

Both cabinets were made from 15mm baltic birch plywood. Note that the above image shows way too much stuffing material, and most of it, specially inside the driver chamber, was removed after some initial sound testing.
Following the line of my Cornu Speakers, I decided to white lacquer the cabinets and didn’t glue the front and back panels, for doing so would prevent me from accessing the electronics or drivers for replacement. I just fixed them in place with a couple of screws and made use of speaker gasket strips to seal the cabinet properly.

Given its price range, this speakers sound just awesome. The TPA3110’s quality is hardly beaten by anything around 8 quid, which is the cost of the amp board. The overall volume of the system exceeded my expectations, it fills a large room without problems, and the bass response is really really good. The placement of the speakers made quite a difference, to make a long story short, it ended up sounding its best laying on the floor.

If you’re looking for something small, cheap, portable, don’t want to add a sub, and the limited power is not a problem, this is your best bet!!
